Scotty McCreery was born in 1993 to Judy (née Cooke) and Michael McCreery in Garner, North Carolina. His mother works as a realtor. His father was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to a Puerto Rican mother from San Juan and an American father. He used to impersonate Elvis as a child, and started learning guitar at age ten. He attended West Lake Middle School and sang at his graduation. He also attended Garner Magnet High School where he joined a vocal ensemble, Die Meistersingers, that performs across the United States. He started out singing tenor but switched to bass when his voice turned lower in his sophomore year. He won a singing contest called "Clayton Idol" at the Clayton Harvest Festival in Clayton, North Carolina, and was one of 36 finalists in a "Rip the Hallways" contest featuring teenage vocalists in North Carolina

His announcement of a brand-new single was not only the hottest Taste of Country article of the week, it was the most commented on. Most people just showed some Scotty love, while a few took exception to our lukewarm review.

Scotty McCreery, Chely Wright React to Earthquake in New York
An earthquake has reportedly impacted much of the East Coast of the United States, with the epicenter being in Virginia. Scotty McCreery felt it in New York City, as did newlywed country singer Chely Wright, and we’re seeing Twitter accounts of tremors everywhere from North Carolina to Washington, D.C. to Boston. The news is still breaking, and many people are still recovering from being shaken up (literally).
“Just experienced my first earthquake in New York,” McCreery tweeted. “I’ve lived in Cali for the last 4-5 months.. I woulda thought it would’ve happened there.” Only two minutes earlier, Wright took to her personal Twitter page to ask followers whether or not what she felt was actually an earthquake. “Was there just an earthquake in NYC?” the singer, who married now-wife Lauren Blitzer over the weekend, asked her fans.
The unexpected quake measured in at a 5.9 magnitude at the epicenter in Virginia but was felt far and wide, and phone lines in many states are jammed at this time. According to the New York Times, city buildings throughout the northeast were evacuated after the earthquake.
Chely Wright tweeted later, “We live on the 8th floor. I really really felt it. @lulublitzer didn’t, she was up, walking around in the kitchen. Over 30 seconds.” While country music’s biggest base in Nashville, Tenn. went unshaken, newly-signed Love and Theft reached out to their fans on the east coast to send well-wishes. “Sending love to our east coasters, just heard about the earthquake, hope all are OK!!” the band tweeted.
This is the second strange earthquake occurrence in under 24 hours. On Monday, Trinidad, Colo. was struck by a quake of similar magnitude — the largest natural earthquake in the state in well over a century.
‘American Idol’ winner and North Carolina boy Scotty McCreery was the victim of a rude awakening while visitng the New York City tri-state area today. The ‘I Love You This Big’ singer visited Long Beach in Long Island, N.Y. and was completely and utterly shocked at having to pay to use one of nature’s facilities! He demonstrated his country boy way of thinking with his tweets about the matter, especially when he showed his local pride and stated his preference for the Outer Banks beaches in his home state.
He tweeted: “chillin at Long Beach, Long Island and you have to pay to go on the beach? I ain’t never heard of such.. #criminal”
In addition to being miffed about shelling over cash for a beach tag, he lamented: “and the beach ain’t even nice. tractors going over the sand, planes flying over head makin noise, no waves. OuterBanks, NC > Long Beach … just think if they made Christopher Columbus pay to pull up at the beach.. what if he didn’t have his wallet on him like me?”
McCreery, who also rang the closing bell on the NASDAQ floor while in the area, has made his thoughts and feelings about pay-to-use beaches clear, and can’t say we blame him! Beaches, like hugs, should be free to all who want to enjoy them.
Students everywhere are getting ready to head back to school, including recent “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery. Being in the spotlight might have gained Scotty fame and fortune, but it won’t help get him out of his school work! Scotty is about to begin his senior year of high school and his mom will be teaching him out on the road.
“School is starting up pretty soon, so I am going to have to get everything in order,” Scotty tells Dan Van Media. “You know Mama is a certified K through 12 teacher so she is going to be teaching me on the road and I can promise you she ain’t going to be giving me no slack!”
“Miss McCreery was a mean teacher back in the day,” Scotty joked. “Nah, she likes that rep but she was nice…so she’ll be on me!”
Mama McCreery was present during the conversation and refuted the ‘mean’ comment but did confirm that “Scotty will need to buckle down for school.” Mama McCreery also confirmed with Dan Van Media that the family will stay in North Carolina and will not be moving to Nashville saying “Nashville is only a one hour flight, we will make that work.”
Scotty has started the process of school and will really concentrate on his studies as the “American Idols Live” tour wraps on September 10th, followed by some more free time for school after his debut album Clear As Day releases on October 4th.
New Documentary Follows Scotty McCreery in His Hometown
A new documentary featuring behind-the-scenes footage of ‘American Idol‘ champ Scotty McCreery in his hometown of Garner, N.C. will air on Great American Country in early October.
‘Introducing: Scotty McCreery’ airs on Oct. 3, one day before his album ‘Clear as Day‘ hits retailers. Many Scotty fans need no introduction to the teenage star, but the title reflects the show’s inclusion as part of the network’s ‘Introducing’ series that puts the spotlight on rising singers within country music.
Todd Cassetty led the film crew that interviewed the singer when he came back to North Carolina for a concert in July. The crew also visited important spots in McCreery’s life, like his high school and church, which they plan to highlight in the in-depth program.
Cassetty came away impressed with the 17-year-old. “Seeing him at the concert, I was blown away,” Cassetty told the News Observer. “He’s got incredible stage presence. Performing for a huge arena crowd is different than performing for a small crowd on television. Whatever ‘it’ is, he’s got it.”
Cassetty also gushed about McCreery’s personality and demeanor. “As someone who works with a lot of artists, you always wonder what the real person is behind the public persona,” Cassetty said. “The great thing about Scotty is it’s exactly the same. He’s a solid-as-a-rock good guy, and down to earth. And frankly, I think that is what has made him successful and what won ‘Idol’ for him. People sense that genuine young man, and they either want to date him or want their daughters to date him. … He’s definitely more mature than any 17-year-old I’ve ever met.”
